Vintage lifestyle and fashion magazines, along with industrial-grade wood, cardboard, and textiles, are all used in Anderson Borba's (b. 1972, Santos, Brazil) sculptures. These resources serve as his foundation. In a process-guided construction, the artist crushes, burns, carves, paints over, and manipulates various elements to create harsh, cracked, yet alluring body forms. Anderson Borba manipulates the physical body to the point of anthropomorphic abstraction through a complex arrangement between notion and experience. He draws inspiration from both the self-taught carvers of interior Brazil and the canon of historical sculptures.
Among his recent solo shows are I've Seen One of These at Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel, São Paulo, Brazil (2022); Anderson Borba & Alex Canonico at Kupfer Gallery, London, UK (2021); The End Begins at the Leaf — Anderson Borba & Antonio Tarsis, BeAdvisors Art, Londres, UK (2021); and Ride the Worm at Set Gallery, London, UK (2018).
Additionally, he has participated in group shows. Never just this mind, never just this world, Comporta 2023, Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel + kurimanzutto, Comporta, Portugal (2023); Para-raios para energias confusas, Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel, São Paulo, Brazil (2023); Eccentric spaces, The Artist Room, London, UK; I Could Eat You, Clearing + Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel + Madragoa, Casa de Cultura da Comporta, Comporta, Portugal (2022); and Tragédia!, Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel, São Paulo, Brazil (2022).
