Lindsey (Lou) Howard’s ceramic practice investigates the politics of food, revealing its entanglements with environmental justice, capitalism, and industry. Howard’s sculptures merge culturally defined “desirable” or “indulgent” foods to draw attention to the intertwined emotions of desire, pleasure, addiction, and guilt. These works capture the ostentatious spectacle of foodie culture that is largely promoted through social media and national marketing campaigns. Utilizing a process similar to cooking, Howards ceramic works present a satirized feast that pushes the boundaries of food humor and horror. Howard further considers the narratives of catastrophe that loom large over the future of food sustainability during our current era of environmental disaster and crisis.
