Ishmael Randall Weeks was born in 1976 in Cusco, Peru and graduated with a BA from Bard college in 2000 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2007. His practice is multifaceted and includes site-specific installations, sculpture, video and works on paper. The core of Randall Weeks’s practice is the notion of transformation. Urbanisation, regeneration, escape and collapse are all predominant themes in his work. Often he employs found objects and recycled materials, and by using them in his sculptures invests these materials with new meanings. The objects he uses can be anything from books, tires, bicycles or discarded machine parts. Many of his pieces also use concrete.
In 2006 Randall Weeks was the recipient of the Foundation of Contemporary Art’s prestigious artist grant. Since then his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at several institutions worldwide, such as the Eleven Rivington, Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City and Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO). His work has also been included in group shows in many important group shows, including at MoMa PS1 (2010), The Museum of Arts and Design, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern of Art, Contemporary Art Museum Lima (LiMAC) and The Lima Art Museum (MALI).
